Dora Deane TREDITION CLASSICS Mary Jane Holmes 9783842462663 Books
Dora Deane was but twelve years of age when she became an orphan. Her dad died first, then a few years later, her mom died. She was left with only a widowed aunt with two daughters, and an uncle somewhere in India. Her Uncle Nat had left for India after his brother married the girl he had been in love with for years. His brother was closer to her age and they fell in love. He could not bear seeing her with any other man so fled to Europe and soon established a profitable business in India where he remained. He was to be Dora's guardian but felt he couldn't bear seeing her, reminding him each day of her mother and his lost love. He contacted his sister-in-law and made arrangements to send a fair amount of money each year for her care. He also committed himself to pay for education and any other expense she may incur.
Dora's Aunt Sarah was somewhat compassionate and felt the additional money would aid her and her two daughters, as well as help her niece. Her eldest daughter, Eugenia, was very selfish and had other ideas. She convinced her mother to never allow Dora to know of the money, nor write to Uncle Nat. Instead Eugenia responded to his generous allowance and inferred that Dora couldn't take the time to write and was ungrateful. Thus, Uncle Nat had a poor opininion of Dora...and yes, this is a somewhat different twist to the ever popular 'Cinderella' story.
Mr. Hastings is the one who found Dora nearly frozen, lying next to her dead mother. He had observed her and her mother's situation for quite some time. He admired them both tremendously. He sought the help of his mother and sister in giving her shelter and food until they could contact her guardian and aunt to give her a home. Mr Hastings had told his fiance' of his observances and finally of the tragic end. After that, he lost tract of the girl.
An elaborate home on the hill, in the small town Dora lived in with her relatives, had been vacant for years. Dora was seventeen when someone bought it to live in with his new wife....Mr Hastings, if course!
Eugenia, putting on social airs, befriended his wife, then the story builds from there.
Even though the ending is somewhat predictable, the emotional roller-coaster is strong throughout the story. It only drags slightly in places.
The writing style is exceptional. The classic tale is given a fascinating twist which, I feel, actually improves upon the original tale.
Key Points: Tragedy, despair, poverty, cruelty, deceit, compassion, befriending, acceptance, gratitude, selfishness/unselfishness, forgiveness, and revenge.
The book kept the reader's attention, plus, kept the suspense growing until the very end. The cover does not coincide with Dora's physical description. I feel it could have been created much more effectively. However, the cover is plain on most other editions. The character strengths were consistent throughout the story. There was mostly a solid "flow" throughout the tale. It was very"cleanly" written. Safe for family reading. Even for older elementary children.
My review of this book deems it worthy of a solid Four and 1/2 Stars rating.

Dora Deane TREDITION CLASSICS Mary Jane Holmes 9783842462663 Books Reviews
All of Mary Jane Holmes books were written at the turn of the century and reflect the times in which she was
living. This was an excellent read. I highly recommend all of her books.
Mary Jane Holmes vividly depicts the human heart at its worst. Her conclusions leave the reader very satisfied that justice and grace prevail.
If you like Jane Austin, Charles Dickens, and Lucy Maud Montgomery...you need to read Mary Jane Holmes.
What a great read! I couldn't put it down. It's the story of Dora, an orphan, who goes to live with relatives who aren't nice at all, especially one of her cousins. You know that eventually, the wrongs against Dora comes out, but how it happens & what happens as a result is what you can't wait to know.
Orphaned, Dora is forced to live with her snobbish relatives. Dora's uncle sends money to help with her expenses. Unfortunately, Dora isn't aware and her aunt uses the money to further her own daughter's future. Like Cinderella, Dora works and is treated like a maid in her aunt's home.
Growing up into a graceful young woman, Dora overcomes all odds and finds happiness.
Another MJH book I recommend.
I’ve read this book many times. And own a lovely antique hard back of this book. However due to failing eye sight it’s easier for me to read it on the kindle where I can change the font size and hold it very close to my face to read. I love this book. It’s sweet and sad and tears at your heartstrings. It’s definitely a favorite of mine.
I am an avid reader of old fashioned books with a Christian theme. The heroine has to suffer much trial and tribulation but all comes out right in the end - naturally. Have a box of Kleenex handy.
I am absolutely thrilled that I can get these books on my , because when they were listed at the back of other books (which they used to do in the "old days" - I used to haunt used booksellers in Britain to see if I could find them - and I was never successful.
Try the old fashioned ones such as "Little Colonel" "Wide wide World" "Daisy" "Melbourne House' and be thankful that we live in the 21st century!
Dora Deane, orphaned at the age of twelve, is grudgingly taken in by her aunt; on the surface, as a family member, but reality soon shows that she makes a very convenient servant, especially for her cousin Eugenia, who has high ambitions.
These ambitions lead Eugenia to plot and deceive, all in view of the coveted prize To one day be Lady of the Manor at Rose Hill, the Big House in the small town where the Deanes live in comparative poverty.
Dora does not suspect anything until years later, and without complaint does all the menial tasks set on her, although she'd much rather go to school, having developed a fondness for books and learning.
How the owners of Rose Hill get to meet Dora, resulting in an improbable friendship and, eventually, her finding love and happiness, is told over the course of several years. Everyone gets their reward in the end - there is some moralising in this book, but it is more out of a deep sense of justice than the overly pious attitude of Charlotte M. Yonge, making for a read not unpleasant, and not without its moments of tension (especially when Eugenia is about to find out that she has been found out).
Places and people are described clearly enough for a good mental picture without dwelling too much on every little detail of ladies' hairstyles and attire. Several times, I had been expecting something else to happen, but the overall outcome was not surprising.
Neither particularly recommending this book nor advising against it, I found this a relatively pleasant read, not overly challenging - and not too long -)
